Finite element models of electromagnetic devices are accurate but slow to simulate. Model order reduction gives small models that can be solved in a fraction of the time.
This internship is part of a collaborative project between L2EP and LAPLACE. L2EP (Lille) develops the Cauer Ladder Network (CLN) method for reduction of low frequency electromagnetic models. It gives reduced models in the form of equivalent RLC circuits, which can easily be coupled with the circuits around the device. CLN has difficulty handling frequency-dependent material properties (conductivity, permeability). Previous work in this project overcame this with the Loewner framework, developed at LAPLACE (Toulouse). The internship will build on these promising first results with two goals: (i) reconstruct the electromagnetic field from the Loewner reduced model, and (ii) preserve structural properties of the full model. The student will implement port-Hamiltonian variants of Loewner interpolation, and propose a method to turn the resulting port-Hamiltonian model into an equivalent circuit, as CLN does.
